The Best Natural Hair Care Routine For Every Porosity Type

Every natural haired person has struggled with moisture retention. A primary cause of this challenge is the lack of information on natural hair porosity. Natural hair is like a cotton pad; it can absorb and retain moisture. This ability is called Hair Porosity. Every human hair is porous, but the level of porosity depends on your natural hair regimen. However, the hair cuticles can suffer wear and tear, which can either increase or decrease porosity. There are three types of hair porosity: low, medium, and high. Best Hair Regimen for Different Porosity Types

Low porosity

These natural hair cuticles are tightly coiled and closed, which makes it a struggle for moisture to penetrate hair strands easily. However, when moisture gets in it, it retains the moist for a more extended period. The best practice for this hair will be to incorporate aloe vera or glycerin to one’s regimen. Low porosity hair needs humectant to help attract moisture and seal it inside. Also, choose lighter and water-based products when shopping for your hair and stay away from heavy styling products.

However, low porosity hair is prone to build up and can feel stiff when too much protein is on it. If you think that your hair doesn’t respond to your regimen, then try a clarifying shampoo or do an ACV rinse. Use protein-free store-bought deep conditioners or DIY with banana, coconut milk, honey, and aloe vera. Apricot kernel oil, argan oil, grapeseed oil, and sweet almond oil are ideal. Try using heat caps and hooded dryers for the deep conditioner to open up the hair cuticles and allow penetration of nutrients.

Medium porosity

– The hair cuticles are partly opened in this type, and they can absorb and retain the necessary nutrients and moisture for the hair. It can hold on to moisture for a decent amount of time. This hair type requires little maintenance because it holds styles well. Occasional deep conditioning treatments with protein conditioners can benefit medium porosity hair, but proteins should not be included in your daily regimen. The use of natural hair oils like coconut, olive, and jojoba can help seal moisture. Shea butter can be in one’s regimen too. Avoid the use of excess heat and remember that hair dyes can alter hair’s porosity.

High porosity

– Hair strands that are spaced out and have open cuticles which can absorb moisture quickly but loses it at the same pace are highly porous. High porosity hair is prone to damage and could be a result of excess chemical processing of the hair. Use leave-in conditioners and heavy kinds of butter to seal the hair and prevent the holes in hair cuticles from absorbing excess moisture. Introduce anti-humectant to help fight high humid climates.

Natural forms of anti-humectants include shea butter, coconut oil, avocado oil, and olive oil. Avoid too much manipulation of the hair to retain length and prevent breakage. Perform a protein-based deep conditioner treatment from time to time to help strengthen hair strands. Also, use low heat, and apple cider vinegar (ACV) will work to adjust the pH balance of your hair. Rinsing with the slightly acidic ACV will help flatten the cuticle and seal in the moisture.

 

How to test for your natural hair porosity

  1. Float test

Take some clean hair strands and place them into a glass of water. Allow this to sit for 5 minutes and observe. If it sinks to the bottom, it is high porosity hair. If it floats just on top of the water, it is low porosity hair. However, when the hair strands settle midway in the water, it is medium porosity type. Please ensure that your hair strands are thoroughly washed and clean to avoid residual products from tampering with the results.

  1. Water droplets:

Another way to discover your hair’s porosity range is to spritz a section of your clean natural hair with water. Wait for some minutes and observe the spritzed part. When the moisture absorbs into your hair immediately, it is high range porosity. But when water needs a few minutes to penetrate hair strands, it is medium range porosity. Lastly, water that merely sits on the hair as visible droplets after waiting for more than 5 minutes is low porosity hair.

Always remember that your hair can have two ranges of porosity. A section might be highly porous than another section. Regardless, be gentle with your hair and stay away from sulphates and silicones.
